In this day and age with less job openings and more unemployed, timing is everything!  As soon as you find a job posting submit your resume and cover letter as soon as possible.  If a company calls be sure to pick up the phone right away or call back as soon as possible.  Set up job alerts to get job opening notifications instantly.  If you hesitate at all you may miss your opportunity because someone else is already seeking out that position.

On behalf of CareerBuilder, Harris Interactive conducted a recent survey of hiring managers to uncover the most common mistakes job seekers make during interviews.  You might be shocked to read some of the obvious things to avoid.

The top mistake while interviewing is to answer your cell phone or text according to 71% of managers surveyed.  In order, the next few common mistakes include appearing disinterested, dressing inappropriately, arrogance, negative comments about an employer, gum chewing, providing vague answers and asking poor questions.

Treat Your Job Search Like a Job

For most people when you lose a job the most important thing at that time is to find a new job.  It takes times to find a decent job and the more effort you put towards your search the better off you will be.  Treat your job search as a job itself.  Keep a set schedule of when you will work on your resume and cover letter, when you will make follow up phone calls, when you will search internet boards, time for networking meetings, etc.  Keeping a schedule will keep you on track, keep you busy and hopefully find that job you have always been dreaming of.
